During my years as a college administrator and faculty member, I was saddened each winter break to learn just how many of our seniors were not on target for graduation in the spring. This is, unfortunately, a fairly a common problem. Complete College America reports that the average time to a bachelor’s degree at most universities is 4.8 years, with students taking, on average, more than 15 credit hours that are unnecessary to graduate.
The reasons students get off track can vary. Sometimes the cause is related to poor academic performance or changing from one major to another. For many students, life simply gets in the way. But there is another key barrier to on-time graduation, one in which schools bear responsibility, and that is the failure to regularly offer the courses needed for students to graduate on time.
